My brain continues to surprise me…

But not always in a good way!

Funny (to me) story time: My 40s hit and I read about what to expect in this season of life, and yet my body and brain continue to surprise me as they go through wild changes. Last week, I couldn’t remember the name of one of two main POV characters in a book. Of course, that happens to a lot of people. We read a lot of books and can’t remember everything about them all. Here’s the important part of this situation:

It was a book I wrote!

Yep, I couldn’t remember the name of my own main character, and I had even reread the book for fun a month or so ago. I knew his name started with the letter D, but I kept thinking of other D-named characters I had written or other names that I knew weren’t correct. It didn’t take me minutes to remember either. I didn’t have a chance to go look it up, so it took a few hours before my brain suddenly yelled Dell!

Then, a few days later, I couldn’t remember the name of a side character in the same book! Dell’s brother’s name started with an M, but other M names from my other books again kept swirling around in my head. I was so annoyed that I booted up my laptop just to find Mason’s name, and then I shook my head and went about my day. Perimenopausal brain fog made me laugh at myself so hard. At some point, their names will be front of mind when I go back to edit Shadow Walker, but for now, I’m going to keep working on the Dreamcatcher series with my writing group and get back to editing other works.
