School is ending…

Welcome summer!

Another change of season and routine is upon us. Summer break started last week for my high schooler and kicks off in two days for my fifth grader.

This spring has been very busy for me and a bit frustrating on the writing front. I’m proud of my completion of major edits to my 4-book Dreamcatcher series in March and the work I did on my standalone novel Red Hour in April, but the month of May was a slog. I wish I had made more headway on my writing goals.

I had several volunteering commitments and other priorities during the past several weeks, so querying took a backseat as well as writing. I sent a few queries last week and am planning to dedicate a small amount of time most weekdays in future. I also hope to draft a couple new scenes for Red Hour, even if they aren’t polished, so that I can consider the first draft of that book done.

But… it is also summer break for my kiddos! My honest “family first” values push me to take advantage of the stay-home parent experience and take trips to the pool, zoo, state parks for hiking, and more. My teenager is heading into his senior year of high school next fall, which means it’s time to plan trips for college visits, too.

On the rainy days or unbearably hot days, I’m sure I’ll be parked behind this laptop, but I’m not going to set firm writing goals. I want to extend grace to myself and be flexible. My life is full of many wonderful things and I don’t want to waste a minute with regrets or guilt. I’m focusing on balance, patience, and joy.

Happy Summer!
