My new writing assistant…

Is more like a distraction.

We have a second miniature schnauzer in the house! Meet Murphy, the baby of the family. I now feel like I have four kids: a teenage son, canine middle child Scooch is 11, my younger son is in fifth grade, plus the new puppy.

We intended to get a puppy this summer so everyone would be home to train him, but it’s not like puppies are born every day nearby so Murphy came home right before the kids headed back to school. It’s mostly been me handling the care, but still is a group effort. The hubs has been very helpful at night and in the mornings before he heads off to work and my sons give me a hand when needed.

Yet, I have a feeling Murphy will be my dog just like Scooch, because I’m a stay-home parent and writer. Of course, Murphy will form bonds with each member of the family, but he’s already starting to follow me around like Scooch does.

Puppies need to be watched constantly so when he’s been ready to nap, I’ve tried to stick him in my lap while I work. It hasn’t worked out so great. Just like my writing assistant Scooch, Murphy sometimes decides that he has a great idea for my next paragraph and attempts to lay his paws right on my keyboard to type out his fantastic addition to my book. Sometimes he is just trying to chew on my laptop and I need to give him a toy again.

I might have to fire my new writing assistant if this continues.

But he’s so darn cute I probably never will.
