Appreciate your first readers…
Every. single. time.
My husband hasn’t read a published book in a year. He’s too busy reading my drafts—and, you know, working, biking, doing things he loves. I try not to ask him more than once a week: “What chapter are you on?” I try. I do. But I devour books in a matter of days and sometimes forget to be patient with slower readers. Plus my first readers have lives of their own.
I actively remind myself to be patient because I truly appreciate the support and the growth I can achieve when I get their feedback. Even when I’m dying inside because they’ve had my manuscript for months and I have to know what they think right now! Nope nope nope, don’t ask Beth. Just sit down and write something else already.
Because their honest reactions are worth the wait.
Friends, family, and writing group peers—thank you for supporting me by reading my stuff! And I will try to give you the time you need to do it. Please forgive me when I bug you. I am truly grateful to have you in my life, giving up your time to read my words.
